What was your thought process in coming up with your photo?
I was stumped for Found ideas all week and it wasn’t until early Sunday morning that I actually started shooting. I knew during the week that I wanted something with a dark background and a very defined light on the subject. I finally decided on some ancient camera that was at my house and I put it inside the cabinet so I would be better able to control the light.
What settings did you use (shutter/aperture, ISO, etc)?
shutter: 3.2″
aperture: F/5.6
ISO:100
Did you do any Post Production? If so, what did you do?
I did shoot this photo in .ARW (that’s Sony for Raw) so when I opened it in Camera Raw I changed the white balance a tiny bit, but besides that I didn’t do anything else to it.
What tools did you use (flash, lens, meter, etc)?
To take this shot I used my standard lens. I put my camera on a tripod and then used a flashlight to get the the effect of the light. You can see that the shadow closest to the camera follows along the door on the right side, that is what allowed for the light to make such a distinct line. I put my camera on self timer and stood just out of view while I pointed the flashlight down into the triangle shaped gap and held the light as still as possible. Oh yeah, it was completely dark other than what was given off by the flashlight.
What have you learned from this assignment?
This assignment has taught me well. I love that style of lighting now. I had never thought it to have looked like that. I always thought you needed to capture all of the subject that is in view of the lens. This shot proved to me that great lighting can bring a dramatic effect to a shot, even if it is only shining on part of the subject.
What would you have done differently now that it’s over?
I wish I had a remote commander because waiting 10 seconds after you get the shot ready to go makes for a long time shooting, especially since I like to try different settings and take several shots from several angles because I’m not exactly sure what will make a good photo until I can see them all on a computer screen.
Anything else?
All these comments are in retrospect. I don’t think of all these things when I’m shooting. These comments are great because I look back at the experience and see why I did certain things, or why certain things I did added or detracted to the finished product. Thanks for the votes ![]()
